Marathons
One of Swee Chiow's dreams over the years was to run a marathon.
He said: "42 km is a very very long distance. But I must
at least try." In December 1997, he ran his first marathon
in 4 hours 30 minutes.
After the run, he said: "It was a incredible feeling
when I crossed the finish line. I did not win any medal but
personally, I have achieved what I set out to do. And that
alone is good enough reason for me to try."
The following year, he ran his second marathon.
His friendly advice to anyone attempting a first marathon:
"When you stand at the starting line of a marathon, don't
think of the finish line."
Cycling
In June 2001, he joined a group of cyclists on a long distance
event.
The expedition goal was to cycle from Penang to Singapore
via Kota Baru, a total distance of about 1,210km in 10 days.
Swee Chiow had never before cycled more than 100km in any
event.
He signed up anyway: "I want to put to test my experience
from climbing to that of endurance on bicycle." He completed
the journey. He said afterwards: "It was extremely rewarding
to try something new, enjoy the trip, raise funds and make
new friends along the way."
